Bags and belts: that's why nappa leather is the best friend of women

Soft, rounded and padded.
I'm not talking about chairs, but about the object of desire for many women as well as the undisputed queen of social networks: the Pouch by Bottega Veneta.
Appeared in 2019 on the arm of the first lucky ones like Rihanna, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Salma Hayek, it quickly generated an unbridled desire that after two years shows no signs of abating and that the fashion house has ridden, bringing out some variants from sure success: the mini version or the shoulder version with golden chain.
But it is not the only Bottega Veneta bag to have made record sales; last year, a year after the release of the Pouch and in the worst period for the world economy, the Padded Cassette made its appearance: a new record in sales volume and a new phenomenon on social media.
And as always, when you have an idea of success in front of you, copies flock directly from the Far East.
But what is the basis of these two real phenomena?
Well, definitely a distortion of the classic idea of a bag: the Pouch, in fact, can be carried by hand like any other clutch, but the effect is more interesting if it is placed under the arm, like a shoulder strap bag without a shoulder strap. How long has it been since we saw a bag, or rather an it bag, that suggested a new yet recognizable gesture, that of slipping it under the arm, perhaps putting your hands in your pockets?

Perhaps from the appearance of the Hermès Birkin that convinced women to be carried hanging in the crook of the elbow, with the hand a little suspended in the void in front of them.
But this is only the first of the reasons; another resides in the softness of the shapes, in strong contrast to the rigid lines of models of the past.
And how can this softness be obtained in the shapes? Obviously with a material, or rather in this case with a leather, soft and sagging like nappa.
Maybe you don't know that nappa is a type of full grain leather that is tanned with chrome and that it is a relatively recent type of tanning because it dates back to 1800, even if it was only patented in 1910; from the first postwar period onwards it had a very strong expansion, so much so that today more than 80% of leather productions are chrome tanned.
But as I mentioned in the last article, it is not only a relatively recent tanning but also very fast because it takes 3-6 hours to tan a leather while with vegetable tanning it takes on average 24 hours. A nice saving of time which translates into an increase in the quantities produced.
But why am I, a specialist in the production of belts, talking to you about nappa leather? Simple, because nappa is not only ideal for creating iconic bags, but also and above all for making elegant and classic belts.
And referring to bags, know that nappa gives its best in women's collections because you can take all the advantages of this type of material:
- An almost infinite range of colors
- A very soft hand
- Great elasticity and silkiness
These characteristics make nappa the perfect material for a variety of different belts:
SASHES

The sashes are unlined belts with a very very soft hand; in the photo you can see one with the buckle, but you can also decide not to put it on and to tie the belt directly at the waist.
CLASSIC BELTS

Being an extremely elegant material, nappa is also ideal for classic collections; in this case the belt is made more particular by the leather-covered buckle, but the possibilities for customization are almost endless.
FASHION BELTS

In this case, customization is the key and more than ever follows the identity and DNA of your brand: I chose this very soft sash with metal beads riveted on the perimeter that give it a more aggressive touch.
These are obviously just some of the examples of belts that can be made with nappa; as I mentioned at the beginning of the article, the color chart is almost infinite so you can choose the most suitable color for your collections based on the DNA of your brand or the choice of an iconic color of your brand.
